How to Handle a Fake or Malicious Amazon Review

A negative review that's honest but unfavorable isn't something Amazon will remove, no matter how unfair it feels — and understanding that distinction early saves a lot of frustration.
What actually qualifies for removal
- Contains profanity, hate speech, or personal information.
- Is about a completely different product (wrong ASIN/listing).
- Includes claims of counterfeit or safety issues that appear to be a competitor tactic rather than a genuine customer experience.
- Was clearly left by a competitor or someone with no verified purchase, using Amazon's reporting tools.

What doesn't qualify
A genuine customer who received the product and disliked it, even harshly, is not a policy violation — reporting it as one and having it denied doesn't help, and repeatedly disputing legitimate reviews can draw unwanted scrutiny to the account.
The better long-term response
Responding professionally (where the platform allows seller responses) and using the feedback to actually improve the product or listing description does more for long-term conversion than fighting every negative review that appears.
If you suspect coordinated fake reviews
A sudden cluster of similar negative reviews in a short window, especially around a competitive product, is worth reporting to Amazon with the pattern documented — Amazon's review abuse detection takes reported patterns seriously.
How to report a review the right way
There are two routes, and the second works better for patterns.
- On the product page, use the "Report" link under the review. Pick the reason that fits and add nothing else. This suits a single review with clear abuse, such as insults or a wrong product.
- For a cluster, open a case in Seller Central. List the review links, the dates, and what they have in common: the same phrases, the same day, reviewers with no other history.
State facts only. "Five one-star reviews appeared within two hours and three repeat the same sentence" is useful. "A competitor is attacking us" is a guess, and guesses get a template reply.
Product reviews and seller feedback are not the same thing
Product reviews describe the item and stay on the product page. Seller feedback describes your service and counts toward your performance metrics. Feedback is easier to remove. If a buyer left feedback that is really about the product, or about an order the warehouse shipped, you can request removal from the Feedback Manager and it is often granted within a day.
Turn complaints into fixes
Read the last twenty low ratings and sort them by cause: damage in transit, wrong size, unclear instructions, weak material. One cause usually stands out. Fix that one thing, whether in packaging, the size chart or the product itself, and the rating recovers faster than any dispute could manage.

Frequently asked questions
Can I reply to a review in public?
Public seller comments were removed some years ago. Brand owners can use the Customer Reviews tool in Seller Central to contact buyers who left critical ratings, using the templates provided.
Can I offer a refund if the buyer changes the review?
No. Any reward for changing or deleting a review breaks the rules, even when the refund itself is deserved. Refund the buyer if it is right to do so, and ask for nothing in return.
How many bad reviews are too many?
There is no fixed number. Watch the average star rating and the return rate together. A falling rating with rising returns means the product or the page needs work.
