The Real Cost of Selling on Amazon: A Fee Breakdown

New sellers often price products based on referral fee alone, then wonder why the margin doesn't match the math — because referral fee is rarely the full cost picture.
The fees most sellers do track
- Referral fee — a category-based percentage of the sale price.
- FBA fulfillment fee — based on size and weight tier, if using FBA.

The fees that quietly erode margin
- Storage fees, which rise seasonally and compound if inventory doesn't sell through efficiently.
- Long-term storage fees on slow-moving stock.
- Advertising spend, which needs to be factored into true margin, not treated as a separate budget line.
- Return and refund processing, especially in categories with above-average return rates.
- Reimbursement gaps — cases where Amazon owes a reimbursement for lost or damaged inventory that was never claimed.
Building a real margin model
A pricing decision that only accounts for product cost and referral fee is incomplete. Factoring in realistic advertising spend, expected return rate, and storage duration for that specific product gives a far more accurate picture of whether a price point is actually profitable.
Why this matters most at scale
A small per-unit miscalculation barely matters at ten units a month — at a thousand units a month, the same miscalculation is the difference between a healthy business and one quietly losing money on its bestseller.
A worked example
The figures below are for illustration only. Replace them with your own, since rates vary by category, size and country.
- Selling price: $30.00
- Product and freight, landed: $8.00
- Referral fee at 15 percent: $4.50
- Warehouse pick, pack and ship: $5.50
- Storage, averaged per unit sold: $0.40
- Advertising at 12 percent of sales: $3.60
- Returns, 5 percent of units written off: $0.70
That leaves $7.30 per unit, a margin of about 24 percent. The seller who counted only product cost and the referral fee expected $17.50. The gap between those two numbers is where most pricing mistakes live.
Costs outside the platform
Some costs never show in a seller report, yet they still come out of the same pocket.
- Import duty and customs brokerage on each shipment.
- Product inspection and compliance testing.
- Software: repricing, keyword and bookkeeping tools.
- Photography and design, spread over the units you expect to sell.
- Currency conversion when payouts land in another currency.
Review the model every quarter
Fee schedules are updated at least once a year, and storage rates rise in the last quarter. A product that was healthy in March can slip below your target by November with no change on your side. Put a date in the calendar, update the rates, and reprice or retire anything that no longer clears your minimum margin.

Frequently asked questions
What margin should I aim for?
Many sellers look for at least 20 to 25 percent after every cost, ads included. Thin margins leave no room for a fee rise or a price war.
Is the Professional plan worth its monthly cost?
Once you sell more than a few dozen units a month, yes. The per-item charge on the Individual plan soon costs more, and the Professional plan opens advertising and bulk tools.
Do fees differ by country?
Yes. Referral rates, fulfillment charges and taxes all vary by marketplace, so build a separate model for each country you sell in.
