How to Avoid the Most Common Amazon Policy Violations

Account suspensions rarely come from sellers deliberately trying to break rules — they come from gaps in process, unclear category requirements, or assuming a shortcut is fine because it hasn't caused a problem yet.

Review manipulation, even unintentionally

Asking a friend or family member to buy and review your product, offering any form of compensation for a review, or using a review-exchange group are all violations — even when the review itself is genuinely positive and unprompted in tone.

Editing a shared listing incorrectly

On listings shared with other sellers, changes to title, images, or bullets affect everyone selling that ASIN. Unauthorized or inaccurate edits — even made in good faith — can trigger a listing suppression or a complaint from another seller.

Missing category-specific documentation

Restricted categories (supplements, cosmetics, certain electronics) require specific compliance documents before listing. Sourcing inventory before confirming exactly what documentation the category requires is one of the most common causes of a stranded, un-launchable shipment.

Drop shipping without being the seller of record

Amazon permits drop shipping only when you're the seller of record on all paperwork and packaging. Relaying orders to a third party that ships under its own branding is a policy violation, regardless of how the arrangement is described.

The pattern behind most violations

Nearly all of these come from moving fast without checking the specific, current policy for that exact situation — policies do change, and "it worked last time" isn't the same as "it's currently compliant."

A short compliance routine

Rules are easier to follow when checking them is part of the week, not a reaction to a warning. This takes about twenty minutes.

  • Open the Account Health page every Monday. Note any new warning, even a small one, and deal with it that day.
  • Before listing in a new category, read its requirements page and save a copy with the date.
  • Keep supplier invoices, safety certificates and brand letters in one folder, named by product.
  • Give staff their own logins with limited permissions. Shared passwords cause mistakes nobody can trace.
  • Read the news feed in Seller Central once a month. Policy changes are announced there first.

What to do when a warning arrives

A warning is not a suspension. It is a chance to fix something early. Read which product and which rule it names. Remove or correct the listing, then reply through the link in the notice with what you changed. Do not ignore it and do not argue. Several open warnings on one topic are what lead to a review of the whole store.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ask buyers for a review?

Yes, in neutral words and without any reward. The "Request a Review" button in the order page is the safest way. Never ask only happy buyers, and never offer a refund or gift in return.

Is one policy warning dangerous?

One warning that you fix quickly rarely causes harm. Repeated warnings on the same issue, or warnings you leave open, are what put a store at risk.

Where do I find the current rules?

In the Program Policies section of Seller Central help. Rules differ by country and category, so read the page for the marketplace you sell in.
